We have 3 grades of black iron oxide: natural (magnetite) granular coarse, natural (magnetite) fine, and synthetic fine. If you're using a black iron oxide as a pigment, you'll want to know the 3 grades do vary from a speckled dark gray (the speckles are bright and reflective, probably small flakes of mica), a dark gray, and a warm black. That's in the same order as they're listed at the beginning of this paragraph.

This is a natural black iron oxide which comes from the mineral magnetite. This is a somewhat coarser grade of black than the synthetic black iron oxide. It's a grayer, warmer black than the synthetic black iron oxides because of the natural impurities. One other thing of note is the difference in density of the natural and synthetic black iron oxides. The natural is much heavier than the synthetic. Per unit weight the natural is about half the volume of the synthetic oxide.
Used for many things besides a pigment and filler. There are 3 main types, and 3 main colors (although it is found in many shades of these), black, red, and yellow.
The Wiki article on black iron oxide as a pigment is here (it's not too good):

The Wiki article on iron oxide in general is here (it's also not too good):

The Wiki article on black iron oxide (the good one) is here (Iron (II,III) oxide = black iron oxide, Fe3O4):
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron(II,III)_oxide
"Iron(II,III) oxide is the chemical compound with formula Fe3O4. It occurs in nature as the mineral magnetite. It is one of a number of iron oxides, the others being iron(II) oxide (FeO), which is rare, and iron(III) oxide (Fe2O3) also known as hematite. It contains both Fe2+ and Fe3+ ions and is sometimes formulated as FeO ∙ Fe2O3. This iron oxide is encountered in the laboratory as a black powder. It exhibits permanent magnetism and is ferrimagnetic, but is sometimes incorrectly described as ferromagnetic. Its most extensive use is as a black pigment which is synthesised rather than being extracted from the naturally occurring mineral as the particle size and shape can be varied by the method of production"-

Exactly what I needed. The particles are very fine.

The order of fine magnetite powder was packaged very well, arrived quickly, and the seller responded promptly to the note I had on the order, answering a question. It's great that small quantities are available to experiment with for various projects! Will order from NorthernWestStuff again.
