An altered form of hectorite, this is a plastic, hydrous magnesium sodium silicate used as a plasticizer. It's similar in this way to macaloid, bentonite, and veegum T. It's also used in glazes as a suspending agent and binder. Like bentonite and macaloid, it's a member of the smectite group of minerals. Wikipedia says of hectorite, the mineral it's based on,

"Hectorite is a rare soft, greasy, white clay mineral...Hectorite was first described in 1941 and named for an occurrence in the United States near Hector (in San Bernardino County, California... Hectorite is also found in the beige/brown clay ghassoul, mined in the Atlas Mountains in Morocco....Despite its rarity, it is economically viable as the Hector mine sits over a large deposit of the mineral. Hectorite is mostly used in making cosmetics, but has uses in chemical and other industrial applications, and is a mineral source for refined lithium metal."

"[It is] dry processed calcium hectorite, a plastic magnesium-rich sodium hectorite clay of microfine particles (it is a refined version of the same material from which HPM20 and Volclay bentonite are made). One gram of the material has a surface area greater than 750 sq. meters!
Hectalite is available in grades 200 and GM, they have the same chemistry and other physical data except:
-Hectalite 200 has a viscosity of 2000-5000 cps @ 5% solids whereas GM is 50 cps.
-GM has a slightly lower pH of 8-10 whereas 200 is 9-11.
Hectalite 200 is intended for rheology control (stabilizing, gelling, suspending and binding household products, aerosols, paints, enamels and ceramic slurries) whereas GM is intended for binding and plasticizing in ceramic bodies.
The high MgO, CaO and low Al2O3 give this material a chemistry that is unlike other typical fine particled clays.

You can also message us to ask what the total cost of your order will be when excess shipping is refunded before you purchase.
Or, if you see "Request a Custom Order" or "Message Seller", you can request a custom order and your items will be put in a custom listing with the correct shipping. You would purchase it like any other listing.
