This is a higher than "normal" viscosity mineral oil. The standard normal low viscosity mineral oil (or 'baby oil') is what you will find in a drug store which is 70 SUS. We have 4 mineral oils, one that's extra low viscosity 40 SUS, one that's extra high viscosity 600 SUS (this one), one that's high viscosity 350 SUS, and one that's normal viscosity 70 SUS. Note that mineral oil viscosities use the viscosity unit "SUS" versus "cps" or "cSt" as a viscosity unit. By far for the retail consumer, the greatest use and familiarity with mineral oil comes from its sale as Baby Oil. It will always be the 70 SUS mineral oil, and it will be very hard to find any that does not come scented with a perfume.
Here is a Wikipedia article on mineral oil with an excerpt: { https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mineral_oil } "Not to be confused with Mineral spirit.....Mineral oil is any of various colorless, odorless, light mixtures of higher alkanes from a mineral source, particularly a distillate of petroleum, as distinct from usually edible vegetable oils.
The name mineral oil by itself is imprecise, having been used for many specific oils over the past few centuries. Other names, similarly imprecise, include white oil, paraffin oil, liquid paraffin (a highly refined medical grade), paraffinum liquidum (Latin), and liquid petroleum. Baby oil is a perfumed mineral oil.
Most often, mineral oil is a liquid by-product of refining crude oil to make gasoline and other petroleum products. This type of mineral oil is a transparent, colorless oil, composed mainly of alkanes and cycloalkanes, related to petroleum jelly.....Some of the imprecision in the definition of the names (e.g., "mineral oil", "white oil") reflects usage by buyers and sellers who did not know, and usually did not need to care about, the precise chemical makeup. Merriam-Webster states the first use of the term “mineral oil” was 1771...
An excerpt from ScienceDirect https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/materials-science/mineral-oil :
"Mineral oils are refined petroleum-based hydrocarbons. Mineral oils are combinations of paraffins, napthenes, and aromatic oils. A wide variety of mineral oil compositions are employed in cutting and grinding fluids. The lubrication properties are modified for particular applications using additives. A wide range of additives are employed for different purposes. Extreme-pressure additives are added to improve the lubrication properties."
That source mentions "Neat Oils" in passing. What is a "Neat" oil? It simply means as it comes from the manufacturer or supplier, without additions of other substances. It can mean many specific substances added to many other types of specific substances, almost always liquids. For example, if you go into a bar and order "Whiskey, neat", it means you want it straight up from the whiskey bottle, without any ice, water, or other flavorings. The article mentions that both mineral oils and synthetic oils are usually sold as "neat oils".
But, by far for the retail consumer, the greatest use and familiarity with mineral oil comes from its sale as Baby Oil in the drug store. It will always be the 70 SUS mineral oil, and it will be very hard to find any that does not come scented with a perfume (I tried once when I needed the pure kind). So, although by volume, more mineral oil may be found as electrical transformer oil in a "neat" form, the greatest number of people know mineral oil as a "Non-Neat" baby oil because of the added pleasant scent.
Referring back to Wikipedia's article on mineral oils:
Mineral oils have many uses, Wikipedia lists several broad categories:
"Medical uses
Cosmetics
Mechanical
Electrical
Industrial
Food Preparation"
Some other specific and interesting uses are:
--"Mineral oil is used for treating and preserving wooden butcher block counter tops.
--It is commonly used to create a wear effect on new clay poker chips, which can otherwise be accomplished only through prolonged use.Either the chips are placed in mineral oil for a short time, or the oil is applied to each chip then rubbed off. This removes any chalky residue left over from manufacture, and also improve the look and feel of the chips.
--Mineral oil is used as the principal fuel in some types of gel-type scented candles.
--It is used for cooling, such as in the liquid submersion cooling of components in some custom-built computers.
--Veterinarian-grade mineral oil is inexpensive, and is frequently used by amateur radio operators as coolant in RF dummy loads, as mineral oil is typically used as the insulating and cooling fluid in large electrical equipment such as transformers.
--Mineral oil is used as a brake fluid in some cars, such as Citroën models with hydrodynamic suspension, and bicycle disc brakes.
--Mineral oil is burned in specialized machines (both manufactured and home-made) to produce a thick white smoke that is then blown into automotive evaporative emissions (EVAP) systems to find leaks.
--It is used for polishing alabaster in stonework and lubricating and cleaning pocket knives or food handling tools that use an open bearing, thus needing periodic lubrication. Light mineral oil (paraffinum perliquidum) is used as a honing oil when sharpening edge tools (such as chisels) on abrasive oil stones. Mineral oil USP or light mineral oil can be used as an anti-rust agent for blades.
-It is an inexpensive alternative for storing reactive metals, such as lithium and sodium.
--Horticultural oil is often made of a combination of mineral oil and detergent. It is sprayed on plants to control scale, aphid, and other pest populations by suffocation.
--Before the widespread adoption of thermocyclers with heated lids, it was common practice to use mineral oil to overlay polymerase chain reactions in biotechnology to prevent loss of water during heating cycles. It is often used to suspend crystals for use in X-ray crystallography.
--It is used as a transparent collision material for reactions in particle physics, as in the MiniBooNE neutrino oscillation experiment.
--As a relatively low heat combustible with no flavor or odor, mineral oil can be used in fire breathing and fire dancing for entertainment, but there is a risk of injury.
--Paraffin oil is commonly used to fill Galileo thermometers. Due to paraffin oil's freezing temperature being lower than that of water (approx. 24 °F (−4 °C)), this makes them less susceptible to freezing during shipment or when stored in a cold environment."
It's odd that whoever wrote most of that article (and certainly the above list of interesting "Other Uses") only used "Paraffin Oil", a synonym, at the very last entry and at the top of the article when listing alternate names. Everywhere else he uses "mineral oil".
