Please note this is a raw pigment intended to be dispersed into a liquid medium to make paints. Our raw pigments are not meant for use in cosmetics and are not cosmetic grade. Certain pigments disperse more easily than others in certain liquid mediums. For those difficult to disperse into a liquid of your choice, they will need to be ground by a muller or a mortar and pestle into the medium.

Safety note: Handle all dry pigments with care. Work slowly to avoid generating airborne dust and wear a dust mask for extra protection. Also avoid getting the dust all over your hands. Latex gloves are good at providing skin protection without "getting in the way".

Chromium(III) oxide (or chromia) is an inorganic compound. It is the only stable oxide of chromium.
This synthetic Chrome Oxide is a well known pigment in use for many years. Chrome oxide is a very stable and refractory material. Used in green ceramic glazes, its melting temperature is extremely high. It's a very strong dark green once called Viridian and "Guignet's Green". Web Exhibits "Pigments through the Ages" says: [Viridian is a] "very stable and powerful cold green. It's a Chromium oxide dihydrate. Guignet of Paris patented the process for manufacturing viridian or transparent oxide of chromium in 1859. Its excellent permanence and lack of toxicity could replace all other greens, both ancient and modern."
It is also found in a natural form, Cr2O3. Wikipedia says it "occurs naturally as the mineral eskolaite, which is found in chromium-rich tremolite skarns, metaquartzites, and chlorite veins. Eskolaite is also a rare component of chondrite meteorites."
A well used quote from the pigments supplier Natural pigments on Chrome Oxide:
"It also known as chromium sesquioxide or chromia, is one of four oxides of chromium. It is commonly called chrome green when used as a pigment; however it was referred to as viridian when it was first discovered."
It's also used in ceramic glazes. From the Digital Fire Ceramics database:
"Chrome oxide is the only stable oxide of the metal chromium. It is a bright to dark green crystalline powder insoluble in alkalis and acids. It is manufactured from the mineral Chromite mined in southern Africa, Asia, Turkey and Cuba. As with other powerful coloring agents, chrome must be milled fine enough to eliminate specking in glass or glaze."
One other use with which I'm familiar is as a long lasting fine polishing compound (fine abrasive). When you shop for a rouge stick from a jeweler's supply you can find "white rouge", "red rouge", and "green rouge" (which is chrome oxide).
A web page called "5 Interesting Facts About Green Chrome Oxide" has this to say:
"1. Green chrome oxide was used in ink for dollar bills
Because green chrome oxide was difficult to counterfeit at the end of the Civil War, it was part of the original ink used to print American bills. Today, the Treasury Department uses special inks and other features to increase security and prevent counterfeiting.
2. Green chrome oxide adds color to glass products
When manufacturing glass, adding green chrome oxide turns glass–you guessed it– a green color. The higher the concentration, the more intense the color. A commercial example of this is a wine bottle. It also allows some light protection to preserve the wine’s flavor. Green chrome oxide is commonly used in the production of refractory brick to line metallurgical and glass furnaces/kilns as it has a melting point of 2300°C.
3. Green chrome oxide is a pigment for paints
Green chrome oxide is often used in industrial paints where a lot of wear is involved. For example, military vehicles are painted with green chrome oxide paint. It retains its color in high heat and light exposure, making it ideal for outdoor applications.
4. In paste form, green chrome oxide can be used as an abrasive for blade sharpening
In paste form, green chrome oxide can be used to polish glass and sharpen metal blades. It’s used as an abrasive for razor stropping.
5. Green chrome oxide adds color to plastic products and ceramics
Not only does it add color to inks, glasses and paints, green chrome oxide also lends its forest green hue to plastics (e.g. soda bottles) and ceramics. It mixes well with clay and can be used as an ingredient in glazes."
