Please note this is a raw pigment intended to be dispersed into a liquid medium to make paints. Our raw pigments are not meant for use in cosmetics and are not cosmetic grade. Certain pigments disperse more easily than others in certain liquid mediums. For those difficult to disperse into a liquid of your choice, they will need to be ground by a muller or a mortar and pestle into the medium.

Safety note: Handle all dry pigments with care. Work slowly to avoid generating airborne dust and wear a dust mask for extra protection. Also avoid getting the dust all over your hands. Latex gloves are good at providing skin protection without "getting in the way".

This black powder is one of two stable copper oxides. The other is red copper oxide. This a somewhat warm black. It's a dense and expensive compound used most often as a specialty paint pigment and as a pigment in ceramic glazes. It's a viable paint pigment but not often used by artists. It makes an "antifouling" paint for surfaces exposed to sea water because marine plants and animals such as barnacles are repelled by it. Black copper oxide is CuO (Copper(II) oxide or cupric oxide), while red copper oxide is Cu2O (Copper(I) oxide). It's also used extensively as a pigment in ceramic glazes and also as a pigment in glass. Black copper oxide is said to be the oldest ceramic glaze ingredient known. It will produce reds in a reduction firing and other colors (blues and greens) with different formulations. Both black and red copper oxide are expensive. They are dense, almost as heavy as pure copper power. This makes them doubly expensive on a volume basis. There is scattered information about copper oxides on the web, some from the site [ http://www.wisegeek.org/what-is-copper-oxide.htm ]:
"[black copper oxide,] also known as cupric oxide (CuO) occurs naturally as the black or grey mineral tenorite...[copper oxides] occur naturally as minerals in crystal form. Both forms of copper oxide are used in the production of pigments, but they have a number of other, differing, uses...[black copper oxide] is added in small amounts to animal feed to protect against copper deficiency. It is also used as an abrasive for polishing lenses and other optical components." Like nickel carbonate it earns a "2" on the health diamond (the first number) of the NFPA diamond (it's actually a 2,0,1 - the "1" is for reactivity, meaning in this case that it's more reactive with oxygen than a "0" would be). A "1" on the health diamond is most common for inorganic compounds used as pigments, but several are listed as "2". Handle it with care, notably don't move quickly when dispensing or mixing it to avoid getting it airborne. Inhalation is the most common way to subject yourself to harmful effects.
The Wiki article is here (with a quote):
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copper(II)_oxide
"As a mineral, it is known as tenorite and paramelaconite. It is a product of copper mining and the precursor to many other copper-containing products and chemical compounds....Copper(II) oxide is a p-type semiconductor...Cupric oxide can be used to produce dry cell batteries....Cupric oxide is used as a pigment in ceramics to produce blue, red, and green, and sometimes gray, pink, or black glazes....It is also incorrectly used as a dietary supplement in animal feed. Due to low bioactivity, negligible copper is absorbed...It is also used when welding with copper alloys....As a significant product of copper mining, copper(II) oxide is the starting point for the production of other copper salts. For example, many wood preservatives are produced from copper oxide....Cupric oxide can be used to safely dispose of hazardous materials such as cyanide, hydrocarbons, halogenated hydrocarbons and dioxins, through oxidation."

The cost in my cart seems too high, what can I do?

This problem usually occurs with multiple items. We have free shipping on many of our items. In your cart items will have the sum of all embedded shipping costs. If you place an order for 3 or more "FreeShip" items, you will receive a "rebate" for the excess shipping. The more items you have the greater the shipping refund will be. You can also message us to ask what the total cost of your order will be when excess shipping is refunded before you purchase.
Or, if you see "Request a Custom Order" or "Message Seller", you can request a custom order and your items will be put in a custom listing with the correct shipping. You would purchase it like any other listing.

It worked great for my experiment!

This worked perfectly to create bubbles in a glass fusing project. Came well packaged.
