I have to put this at the top of the description because it's so good. For dog people anyway! A customer let us in on a novel use for this crumb rubber:
You know how dogs slip and slide on a non-carpeted floor? It's usually the kitchen and usually when they try to move fast to get out of the way of those 2 legged humans who are always moving around preparing food. They just have to be in there with all those terrific smells! But it's like ice for them and must be frustrating as "H", "e", double "l". The customer put some of this coarser crumb rubber onto her 4 legged member of the family's paw pads. Problem solved with new grippy paw pads!
Here's what the customer says:
"Thank you so much for the fast shipping on your ground rubber. I use superglue to glue this to the pads of my dog's paws so he gets better grip on our hardwood floors. Amazon charges 30 bucks for a 'kit' that contains half a cup of 100mm crumbs and 3 one use vials of superglue. I confirmed with my vet that this is ok to use as long as my dog doesn't lick it..which he doesn't. THIRTY DOLLARS. Just saying, you have a goldmine there..."
Our customer gave us permission to pass this along.

This is a good quality tire regrind crumb. It's also the least expensive that we have. The particle sizes are mixed between approximately 150 micron to approximately 500 micron (. This grade is a recent find for me. It's a much better quality than other "general" or "coarse" crumb rubber I've purchased where you had white cord particles and steel particles. This has very small and scattered white speckles (not a high concentration), and no steel at all as far as I can tell. It makes a very good general purpose crumb for latex mold making because of the mixed particle sizes. You don't have to purchase multiple single particle sizes and mix them to get a good spread.

People who use latex for molds also use materials other than crumb rubber to save money and alter the properties of the latex mold. Layers of cheesecloth applied and "wetted" (like fiberglass in a polyester part) in layers along with the latex is a well known technique.
One of the reasons that "crumb rubber" (tire regrind) works well with natural latex is that tires themselves are made with natural latex (plus large amounts of carbon black, metal and nylon cord, and some synthetic rubber) and so crumb rubber is very compatible. You can also get away with using it to extend some urethane mold making rubber (you should test a small quantity mix using your particular urethane first). The cost savings when you use it with urethanes are much more than with latex. Urethane rubber is very expensive these days. You should not use crumb rubber with silicone mold making rubber. Platinum cured silicone is very sensitive to sulfur containing materials (amongst other materials). Tin cured silicone is less sensitive but I still think it's very unlikely you'd find a tin cured silicone that would accept it. (I have used old silicone molds ground up by a meat grinder as an extender "crumb" for new silicone molds- it works for tin cured silicones but not platinum).

Crumb rubber is being used these days to make anti-skid surfaces and protective coatings. This is a good grade to use for that purpose because of the mixed particle sizes. There are many sources on the internet for how to do this. Tire regrind crumb is also added to new rubber made into new tires, as a recycling measure to reuse some of the millions of waste tires that are generated each year. Crumb rubber is black but it's also "green" to recycle all those tires we use. One major use for it is in asphalt that is rubberized with crumb.
Wiki has articles on crumb rubber, tire regrinding, rubberized asphalt, and the higher quality micronized crumb rubber (which I also sell):

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tire_recycling
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rubberized_asphalt

Just a short excerpt:
"Rubberized asphalt is the largest market for crumb rubber in the United States, consuming an estimated 220 million pounds (100 kt), or approximately 12 million tires annually. Crumb rubber is also used as ground cover under playground equipment, and as a surface material for running tracks and athletic fields."-
