Volcanic ash, or pumice, is a natural abrasive, filler, and ceramic material made by violent, explosive volcanic eruptions. In a powdered form it's proper name is pumicite (a mineral name). It is extremely porous. It's a form of volcanic glass or "ash" made of irregular shaped particles with sharp edges caused by tiny bubbles (vesicles, tiny cavities). The "foamy" air bubble filled mineral is a natural lightweight material that can make lightweight objects when mixed with resins or cements. When found in chunks it can float on water. It can vary in mineral composition (minerals such as feldspar, augite, biotite, silica, hornblende, and zircon) and color (but is usually a light gray). Because it's an amorphous, non-crystalline glass, it is non-toxic and non-hazardous. As an abrasive pumice is relatively soft (mohs hardness of about 6) and so can only be effective on materials soft or softer as glass. Abrasives like aluminum oxide or silicon carbide are much harder. Where it can be used, it is much less expensive than those two harder abrasives. When mixed with portland cement it can make a lightweight pozzolanic mortar or concrete. It has usefulness in ceramics as a glaze ingredient. The Digital Fire ceramic database says this { https://digitalfire.com/4sight/material/volcanic_ash_1689.html } :

"Pumicite is composed of minute particles of volcanic glass. Pumicite is easily processed due to its fine in nature. Deposits resulted from volcanic eruption blowing large quantities of material into the air which settled in layers, sometimes in thicknesses which compressed to 30 feet or more. Volcanic ash particles are non-crystalline due to the quick cooling during formation. This material thus takes on the unique melting properties associated with a glass.
The chemistry is similar to granite or ryolite. Raw color varies and deposits can be found over wide areas of the central and western areas of North America. Volcanic ash materials vary widely in their chemistry, it is impossible to formulate a representative analysis, the one shown here may not be similar to your native material.
Some types of volcanic ash are balanced enough chemically that they can be used in amounts to 50% or more of the glaze batch. Most require the addition of fluxes and kaolin to form a glaze with reasonable firing and suspension properties."

There's a good Wiki article on it here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pumice
"Pumice is created when super-heated, highly pressurized rock is violently ejected from a volcano. The unusual foamy configuration of pumice happens because of simultaneous rapid cooling and rapid depressurization. The depressurization creates bubbles by lowering the solubility of gases (including water and CO2) that are dissolved in the lava....It is commonly, but not exclusively of silicic or felsic to intermediate in composition (e.g., rhyolitic, dacitic, andesite, pantellerite, phonolite, trachyte), but basaltic and other compositions are known. Pumice is commonly pale in color, ranging from white, cream, blue or grey, to green-brown or black....Pumice is widely used to make lightweight concrete or insulative low-density cinder blocks. When used as an additive for cement, a fine-grained version of pumice called pozzolan is mixed with lime to form a light-weight, smooth, plaster-like concrete. This form of concrete was used as far back as Roman times. Roman engineers used it to build the huge dome of the Pantheon and as construction material for many aqueducts. It is also used as an abrasive, especially in polishes, pencil erasers, cosmetic exfoliants, and the production of stone-washed jeans. "Pumice stones" are often used in beauty salons during the pedicure process to remove dry and excess skin from the bottom of the foot as well as calluses. It was also used in ancient Greek and Roman times to remove excess hair. Finely ground pumice is added to some toothpastes and heavy-duty hand cleaners (such as Lava soap) as a mild abrasive. Pumice is also used as a growing substrate for growing horticultural crops. Some brands of chinchilla dust bath are made of powdered pumice."-
