This and silicon carbide are the two main abrasives used world wide. Aluminum oxide is the less expensive of the two.
It could be used as a filler in resins, or for special effects in paints. Also known as corundum, it's interesting that this is the same material in the precious gemstones rubies and sapphires.

This is a relatively coarse, large mesh size. I bought it to use in a sand blaster where it acts as a very agressive cleaner. The particles are sharp and blocky. It's also a nice dark brown color with some color overtones both lighter and darker. It might make an interesting aggregate to try in high performance concrete. The particles are sharp and blocky. It's also a nice dark brown color with some color overtones both lighter and darker. It might make an interesting aggregate to try in high performance concrete. It's very hard which is what makes it a good abrasive, that and the sharpness of its particles.
The Wiki article elaborates:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aluminium_oxide
"Corundum is the most common naturally occurring crystalline form of aluminum oxide. Rubies and sapphires are gem-quality forms of corundum, which owe their characteristic colors to trace impurities. Rubies are given their characteristic deep red color and their laser qualities by traces of chromium. Sapphires come in different colors given by various other impurities, such as iron and titanium. It occurs naturally in its crystalline polymorphic phase α-Al2O3.....it is significant in its use to produce aluminum metal, as an abrasive owing to its hardness, and as a refractory material owing to its high melting point.....
Applications:
-Filler
Being fairly chemically inert and white, aluminum oxide is a favored filler for plastics. Aluminum oxide is a common ingredient in sunscreen and is sometimes also present in cosmetics such as blush, lipstick, and nail polish.
-Paint {special interference effects like Pearl-Ex}
{Main article: Alumina effect pigment, is here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alumina_effect_pigment }
Aluminum oxide flakes are used in paint for reflective decorative effects, such as in the automotive or cosmetic industries.
-Glass
Many formulations of glass have aluminum oxide as an ingredient.
-Abrasive
Aluminum oxide is used for its hardness and strength. It is widely used as an abrasive, including as a much less expensive substitute for industrial diamond. Many types of sandpaper use aluminum oxide crystals. In addition, its low heat retention and low specific heat make it widely used in grinding operations, particularly cutoff tools. As the powdery abrasive mineral aloxite, it is a major component, along with silica, of the cue tip "chalk" used in billiards. Aluminum oxide powder is used in some CD/DVD polishing and scratch-repair kits. Its polishing qualities are also behind its use in toothpaste.
-Composite fiber
Aluminum oxide has been used in a few experimental and commercial fiber materials for high-performance applications (e.g., Fiber FP, Nextel 610, Nextel 720). Alumina nanofibers in particular have become a research field of interest
-Aluminum
Over 90% of the aluminum oxide, normally termed Smelter Grade Alumina, produced is consumed for the production of aluminum......The remainder, normally called speciality alumina is used in a wide variety of applications which reflect its inertness, temperature resistance and electrical resistance."-

I’ll be testing the garnet and aluminum oxide out as double-duty needle sharpening pattern weights. Really appreciate the detailed descriptions when shopping. Thank you!

Exactly as described. Stable at very high temperatures. Used as an oxygen filter/lining in the bottom of a 3400 degree oxy/propane foundry. Hasnt melted a bit in 3 hours of run time. Very prompt shipping. I highly recommend this seller!
