This is a synthetic bentonite-like thixotropic clay additive for water based liquids. It's made by the German company BYK. They have several grades, this is RD. It's quite amazing how little is needed to turn water based mixes into semi-solid gels. It's especially useful if you need a crystal clear transparent gel, which can come in handy for some applications. There are forms of fumed silica (aka the generic name "cab-o-sil") which will also form clear gels when used with water based liquids, but they can be difficult to use (they tend to float in the air). Laponite® is expensive but you may be able to add less of it to get the same effect as other thickeners, so the price may come out the same or better.
Here's what the supplier says about it:
"A colloidal silica derivative, this will form a firm gel upon addition to water and the application of high shear mixing. Add this to water based paints to create impasto. It is a colloidal clay compound which will impart viscosity and suspension properties to various types of formulations. It is unaffected by alkaline or acidic solutions, and will work well in both. It will form highly thixotropic and heat stable clear gels when dispersed in water at a 2% solids concentration. Full clarity will be obtained after sitting within 24 hours. A water gel can also be used to leach stains from marble. Simply apply, let sit, and wipe off."
"Thixo" refers to thixotropic, a brief excerpt from Wiki:
"Certain gels or fluids that are thick (viscous) under static conditions will flow (become thin, less viscous) over time when shaken, agitated, or otherwise stressed (time dependent viscosity). They then take a fixed time to return to a more viscous state."
In simpler terms it means a thick gel which will flow if agitated or stirred, but will rethicken when agitation ceases. It's essential to "gel-coats" used in the formed fiberglass industry as the initial resin that is sprayed into a mold and which forms the outer surface of the finished product (surfboards, bathtubs, boats, etc).-

If you place an order for 3 or more "FreeShip" items, you will receive a "rebate" for the excess shipping. The more items you have the greater the shipping refund will be. You can also message us to ask what the total cost of your order will be when excess shipping is refunded before you purchase.
Or, if you see "Request a Custom Order" or "Message Seller", you can request a custom order and your items will be put in a custom listing with the correct shipping. You would purchase it like any other listing.
