****************
We've accumulated three concrete super plasticizers. This is a mid price range super plasticizer for use in Portland cement products such as concrete, mortars, grouts, etc. It is one type of pozzolan performance and strength enhancer for concrete. It's called a "Poly Naphthalene Sulfonate (PNS)". It can reduce water usage by up to 25%. There are other pozzolans besides super plasticizers that are effective with concrete, metakaolin is another one that's widely used. In recent years the use of concrete in artworks has surged. Out of that has come an interest in using concrete for jewelry, a novel juxtapositioning of material and function. Concrete calls up "solidity", "strength", "hardness", etc. But standard concrete will not work well for very small objects like rings. Pendants maybe...
A couple of pieces of gravel from a concrete used as a foundation would be larger than the ring. Downsizing is called for. So you need to exchange gravel for medium sand, sand for powder. Portland cement, either gray or white can remain the same, as can any pozzolans.
You really need to use pozzolan(s) if you're doing very small concrete castings like jewelry. If you know something about ceramics, clay, and slip casting, you'll know what a deflocculant is. That's basically what this is, a deflocculant for concrete. It makes suspended particles in a solution more 'slippery' so they move past each other better and the solution flows better (reducing viscosity), which means you can get by with less water added to arrive at a specific viscosity. Therefore density and hardness in the final product is increased. This is expensive stuff, but luckily only a little is needed. And if you're making jewelry your concrete batches will be small anyway.

We have three different super plasticizer's (SP), made by 2 different manufacturers. Super plasticizers are also known as "water reducers". Two that we carry are polycarboxylates. This one is not. All of the superplasticizers increase the flow of concrete while also reducing the amount of water needed. The more water that's in a concrete the more porous it will be when that water leaves. Reducing porosity increases density, hardness, and strength, it's all connected together.
This is a free flowing brown powder (note that the color of SPs will vary from batch to batch). It is a high performance superplasticizer for cement based construction materials. It can be used alone or be compounded with other additives to make custom products such as pumpable concretes. The recommended use is 0.30% to 0.45% by weight of Portland cement. It provides the maximum effect in the first 30 to 40 minutes of addition to the mix. This provides high early strength. It is the most highly recommended SP for shotcrete (sprayed concrete).
The list of applications is from our Melflux Super Plasticizer but these are applications that will benefit from the use of any type of Super Plasticizer:
--Dry concrete mix
--Non-shrink grouts
--Tile adhesives and joint fillers
--Self-leveling underlayments
--Feather edge products
--Fast setting floor screeds
--Self-leveling floor screeds
--Repair mortars
--Injection mortars

Here is some additional information from Fritz:
Mix at high speed for 5 to 7 minutes to insure that the mix is uniformly dispersed throughout the mix.
Concrete temperature, ambient temperature or concrete mixes such as silica fume may require amounts of PNS outside the recommended dosage (decreased PNS). They recommend testing a proposed portioning of ingredients before full scale usage. They say that adding colors to the PNS treated concrete will increase the mixing ability of added color. Fritz PNS is a non-retarding super plasticizer, it will not slow (or speed) the cure of concrete. Using the PNS will increase concrete strength significantly if you lower water amount in the mix. If you do not lower water usage there be only a minimal increase in strength.
Fritz PNS is highly recommended for use with shotcrete.

Here is some more info on super plasticizers and plasticizers in general from Wikipedia ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superplasticizer ):
"Superplasticizers (SP's)...are additives used in making high strength concrete...
Traditional plasticizers are lignosulphonates as their sodium salt. Superplasticizers are synthetic polymers...
"Plasticizers" are chemical compounds that enable the production of concrete with approximately 15% less water content.
"Superplasticizers" (SP) allow reduction in water content by 30% or more...
SPs are used where well-dispersed particle suspension is required to improve the flow characteristics (rheology)...in concrete applications. Their addition to concrete or mortar allows the reduction of the water to cement ratio without negatively affecting the workability of the mixture, and enables the production of self-consolidating concrete and high performance concrete. They greatly improve the performance of the hardening fresh paste. The strength of concrete increases when the water to cement ratio decreases.
The addition of SPs in the truck during transit is a fairly modern development within the industry. Admixtures added in transit through automated slump management systems, such as Verifi, allow concrete producers to maintain slump until discharge without reducing concrete quality."
