Although this is chemically the same as natural tac (hydrated magnesium silicate) it's physical properties are somewhat different, being amorphous instead of crystalline, having a non-flat particle shape, being non-slippery and non-lubricating, and being porous. But, like natural talc, it is lightweight and soft.
It is most frequently used as a filtration material (purifying adsorbent) because of its porosity and very high active surface area. It can be used to filter odors and other impurities from used vegetable and animal oils, other foods like sugar, and polymers. It also finds use as a filler in polymers, ceramics, paper, and other materials. It makes a wonderful anti-caking agent.
It has high chemical purity, high thermal stability, making it suitable for anticorrosion coatings. It's properties make it useful as an ingredient in cosmetics. Its synthetic production method allows it to be made with any particle size including "nanosizes". It can be used as a "nanofiller" in polymers such as polypropylene and polyamides. Naturally, synthetic talc can contain no asbestos!
By way of comparison, natural talc is a powdered form of steatite widely known as "soapstone". It's a very soft mineral that has a unique "slippery" feel. It's often utilized for stone sculpture. Talc also makes an excellent filler for resins, it's lightweight, blends easily, and is inexpensive compared with many other fillers. In the last decade (and before) talc was implicated as a material which can contain asbestos. Controversy and lawsuits followed.
"Commercially available natural talcs are mined in several locations throughout the United States. However, not all talcs are alike, due to different conditions that altered the rock from which they are formed. Depending on the talc used, it can alter verification in a clay body, modify handling characteristics and change the fired color of the clay. Listed are several talcs containing no asbestos:
-Pioneer 2882 is a Texas talc that is low in calcium. 98% can pass 200 mesh.
-TDM-92 is mined from the same trend of talc as Pioneer 2882.
-Pioneer 4388 is a West Texas talc that fires white.
-Sierralite is a refractory talc mined in Montana. It has a high alumina and low flux content.
-Pioneer MB-92 is mined in Texas, and 27% is calcined at 1800° F.
-Ceramitalc HDT is a coarse blended talc with high thermal expansion and low moisture expansion and is good for use in dry press operations."
Wikipedia lists some other things talc is used for { https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talc }:
"Talc is used in many industries, including paper making, plastic, paint and coatings, rubber, food, electric cable, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and ceramics. A coarse grayish-green high-talc rock is soapstone or steatite, used for stoves, sinks, electrical switchboards, crayons, soap, etc. It is often used for surfaces of laboratory table tops and electrical switchboards because of its resistance to heat, electricity and acids. Talc finds use as a cosmetic (talcum powder), as a lubricant, and as a filler in paper manufacture. It is used to coat the insides of inner tubes and rubber gloves during manufacture to keep the surfaces from sticking. Talc, with heavy refinement, has been used in baby powder, an astringent powder used to prevent diaper rash. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that parents not use baby powder because it poses a risk of respiratory problems....Zinc oxide-based ointments are a much safer alternative.
It is also often used in basketball to keep a player's hands dry. Most tailor's chalk, or French chalk, is talc, as is the chalk often used for welding or metalworking.....Due to its low shear strength, talc is one of the oldest known solid lubricants. Also a limited use of talc as friction-reducing additive in lubricating oils is made.
Talc is widely used in the ceramics industry in both bodies and glazes. In low-fire art-ware bodies, it imparts whiteness and increases thermal expansion to resist crazing. In stonewares, small percentages of talc are used to flux the body and therefore improve strength and vitrification. It is a source of MgO flux in high-temperature glazes (to control melting temperature). It is also employed as a matting agent in earthenware glazes and can be used to produce magnesia mattes at high temperatures."

The cost in my cart seems too high, what can I do?
This problem usually occurs with multiple items. We have free shipping on many of our items. In your cart items will have the sum of all embedded shipping costs. If you place an order for 3 or more "FreeShip" items, you will receive a "rebate" for the excess shipping. The more items you have the greater the shipping refund will be. You can also message us to ask what the total cost of your order will be when excess shipping is refunded before you purchase.
Or, if you see "Request a Custom Order" or "Message Seller", you can request a custom order and your items will be put in a custom listing with the correct shipping. You would purchase it like any other listing.
