Pyrite or iron pyrite, also known as fool's gold, is an iron sulfide which is the most abundant sulfide mineral. Pyrite's metallic luster and pale brass-yellow hue give it a superficial resemblance to gold, hence the well-known nickname of fool's gold. Although, having said that, pyrite is the most common ore mineral in some gold-bearing conglomerates. Pyrite is can be distinguished from native gold by its hardness and brittleness. Pyrite fractures are very uneven, sometimes conchoidal. Native gold nuggets, or glitters, do not break but deform in a ductile way. Pyrite is brittle, gold is malleable. Pyrite is actually disulfide of iron, and the metallic crystal grows in cubes, nodules, masses of tiny crystals, and can even be found as flat discs. It is opaque and pale silvery yellow when fresh, turning darker and tarnishing with exposure to oxygen. Pyrite crystals may be cubic, octahedral, or twelve-sided and are often striated. Pyrite can also be massive or granular, or form either flattened disks or nodules of radiating, elongate crystals.
Some have been known to confuse pyrite with marcasite, but as marcasite is also an iron sulfide, but crystallized in a completely different manner, so marcasite it unstable and often crumbles during attempts to carve it.
Pyrite is used to make marcasite. Marcasite jewelry, made from small faceted pieces of pyrite, was known since ancient times and was popular in the Victorian era. Marcasite is a pale bronze yellow or brass color, with dark gray-green streaks. It is a semi-precious stone famous for its unique, stained glass-like shine. It's metallic, green-yellow, brassy, but holds shine like other reflective stones. It's related to the gem pyrite, which is often called fools gold. Marcasite jewelry usually has a multitude of small gems inlaid, as larger pieces of marcasite have become much more rare.
When struck against a hard surface pyrite will create sparks. Pyrite enjoyed brief popularity in the 16th and 17th centuries as a source of ignition in early firearms, most notably the wheellock, where a sample of pyrite was placed against a circular file to strike the sparks needed to fire the gun. Pyrite is used with flintstone in many areas of the as a traditional method of starting fires.
Pyrite has been studied as a non-toxic, inexpensive material in low-cost photovoltaic solar panels. Recent efforts are investigating thin-film solar cells made entirely of pyrite.
Pyrite is used to create iron sulfate that is used to make nutritional supplements, ink, lawn conditioner, water treatment and flocculation, moss killer, and many other chemical processes.
Pyrite plays a part in the beliefs of several cultures, among them the Thai, who have many names for pyrite. It is believed to be sacred, having the power to guard against black magic and demons.
If you are interested in the metaphysical properties of minerals, you will find a very different take on its properties. From { https://mysticcrystalimports.com/pages/pyrite-properties }:
"It has been used in the jewelry industry for thousands of years, as specimens have been found in the ancient civilizations of the Greeks, Romans and the Incas...Cultures in ancient Mexico made scrying mirrors (looking into some sort of reflective surface, such as water, fire, glass, dark stones, etc, to see what messages, symbols, or visions may appear) out of pyrite; they were created by polishing one side flat, to use for scrying, while the rounded side was carved with mystical symbols to assist in the scrying process. Cultures around the world cared amulets for protection and magic from pyrite, it was even one of the first healing stones to be used in a Shaman’s bag...Metaphysical Gemstone Properties: Pyrite helps one to communicate more openly and honestly, providing both emotional and physical protection. If you are indecisive, or unsure about something, carry a pyrite with you as a touchstone to help boost your self confidence. The reflective qualities of the stone make it a wonderful meditation or divination tool….just as the ancient Inca’s used it.
Pyrite increases physical stamina, stimulates the intellect and helps to transform thought into intelligent action. It is a wonderful stone for use in wealth magic or assisting in manifestation of needed energies. An excellent shield-stone, pyrite removes negativity from the aura to help one concentrate...Pyrite is said to balance hormonal rhythms, and to ease the discomfort of menstruation. It is also useful in clearing up confusion of one’s physical symptoms so as to generate a more accurate diagnosis. Pyrite “suns” draw pain from the body, as well as assist in easing depression symptoms. It is also said to help in reducing swelling or reducing fevers when used directly on the physical body."
