This 1/4" to 5/16" is a short glass fiber. It is a good length glass fiber, it handles well and is very suitable for reinforcing liquid resin mixes (epoxy or polyester), which is what most of it is used for. It is a "second", a product that is out of spec, so it is less expensive. It varies from 1/4" to 5/16" long. We also have nylon and other synthetic fibers, which are much more flexible than glass fibers. Both glass and carbon fiber give maximum rigidity to a finished product. Glass is much heavier than carbon fiber, but less expensive.

These fibers can be mixed with resin then applied in layers within a mold, just like laying up cloth fiberglass. It won't be as strong as the cloth layup however. Vacuum bagging it would allow lowering the resin percentage while still "wetting" out the fiber, and thus would increase strength (both with loose glass fiber like this and with cloth). Resins are not the only application for glass fiber however. Glass fiber can be used in water based casting materials like plaster, gypsum cement, and concrete. And they also work in clay bodies but tend to make them less pleasant to work with than bodies that are reinforced with nylon. It depends on your application and the properties you want your end product to have that determine which reinforcement you choose for any given liquid material.
Both glass and carbon fiber give maximum rigidity to a finished product. Carbon (or graphite as it's also called) is used where lightness and rigidity are important.

The cost in my cart seems too high, what can I do?

This problem usually occurs with multiple items. We have free shipping on many of our items. In your cart items will have the sum of all embedded shipping costs. If you place an order for 3 or more "FreeShip" items, you will receive a "rebate" for the excess shipping. The more items you have the greater the shipping refund will be. You can also message us to ask what the total cost of your order will be when excess shipping is refunded before you purchase.
Or, if you see "Request a Custom Order" or "Message Seller", you can request a custom order and your items will be put in a custom listing with the correct shipping. You would purchase it like any other listing.
