Jojoba Oil imitates the natural oils in our scalp and skin; sebum. Therefore, it's very effective as a moisturizer; especially for very dry and brittle hair. While these prices are not cheap, the oil/wax will last you a long time. It is so expensive because the extraction process is quite involved and takes a long time. Jojoba grows wild in the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. The name comes from the Indian word “jojowi”. The bushes can become as old as 200 years and can survive with only 120–200 mm of rain annually. They deliver a waxy fat of interesting properties. The fruit are long, oval, green capsules that hold 1–3 seeds 12–18 cm in length and 6–12 cm in width. The wax is a paramount source for the fatty acids. Jojoba oil/wax is different from other seed oils in that Jojoba Oil is a mixture of long chain monounsaturated liquid wax esters, whereas other seed oils are made of triglycerides. Since it does not contain triglycerides it is not a fat, although sometimes mistakenly regarded as one. It contains only waxes of alcohols with long-chain rare fatty acids. Jojoba oil was experimentally hydrogenated in the '60's, and turned into tiny round beads. These free-flowing, homogeneous, microspheric particles are odorless, tiny white beads. Exfoliation is the removal of dead skin cells on the outer most layer of the epidermis, which is the layer that provides a waterproof barrier and creates our skin tone. Exfoliation can be obtained in a couple of different ways; either chemically with substances such as glycolic acid or physically by applying an abrasive material to the skin. Jojoba beads, with such a delicate, smooth spherical shape, are a wonderful option to slough off dead skin cells without creating microscopic tears on the skin’s surface. Jojoba Beads have provided a going green option for exfoliation materials. Thankfully, they are rapidly replacing Microbeads. Microbeads are a plastic material used in scrubs and soaps for exfoliation purposes that get washed down the drain after use. They can then be found flowing through sewer systems and wastewater treatment plants, which are unable to filter the beads due to their small size. Jojoba Beads can be added to soap and body scrub formulations as a safe, but effective exfoliant. The beauty of natural Jojoba Beads is they are biodegradable! Use of Jojoba Beads results in the material decomposing once it’s flushed down the drain.

As a wax made by the hydrogenation (or or transesterification) of jojoba oil, it is a wax ester and can be used both as a thickener and an emollient (moisturizer). It is one of the vegetable waxes which are relatively high in wax esters. Wax esters are fatty acids that are esterified with alcohols. Wax esters can be saturated or unsaturated. Carnauba and candelilla are also relatively high in wax esters. Beeswax, not a vegetable wax, also has high percentages of wax esters. The Jojoba wax esters are monounsaturated, are very similar to sperm oil from whales which contain 90% wax ester. It therefore provides a direct alternative for the use of products form sperm whales, and one more reason for not hunting them. Other marine organisms like dinoflagellates, Pelagic fish, and fishes store low-density wax esters in their swim bladders or other tissues to provide buoyancy.
