This is an expensive pigment. It is a deep ruby red, deeper than Carmine or Chinese Vermillion. It leans slightly towards blue. It's a semi-transparent lake pigment, another color which started out as an organic dye and is made into a pigment by attaching it to inorganic alumina trihydrate particles. As Wikipedia says, it is "biased slightly more towards purple than towards orange on the color wheel and has a blue undertone. It is named after the organic dye alizarin, found in the madder plant, and the related synthetic lake pigment alizarin crimson (PR83 in the Color Index). William Henry Perkin had co-discovered a way to synthesize the pigment alizarin, which became known as the color alizarin crimson. Its consistency and lightfastness quickly made it a favourite red pigment for artists".

It is synthetic, C.I. Pigment Red 83, Constitution Number 58000. Other names it's sometimes called are: alizarin madder, alizarin carmine, rose madder, madder lake, synthetic madder, alizarin red, and alizarin scarlet. The dye Alizarin is chemically know as 1,2-dihydroxyanthraquinone. It is a natural dye, and there are dozens of hydroxyanthraquinones from plants. It is one of the most stable natural pigments. Again from Wikipedia, it "has been used throughout history as a prominent red dye, principally for dyeing textile fabrics. Historically it was derived from the roots of plants of the madder genus. In 1869, it became the first natural dye to be produced synthetically....Madder has been cultivated as a dyestuff since antiquity in central Asia and Egypt, where it was grown as early as 1500 BC. Cloth dyed with madder root pigment was found in the tomb of the Pharaoh Tutankhamun, in the ruins of Pompeii, and ancient Athens and Corinth. In the Middle Ages, Charlemagne encouraged madder cultivation. Madder was widely used as a dye in Western Europe in the Late Medieval centuries. In 17th century England, alizarin was used as a red dye for the clothing of the parliamentary New Model Army. The distinctive red color would continue to be worn for centuries (though also produced by other dyes such as cochineal), giving English and later British soldiers the nickname of redcoats".

BASF has a page I like that both cuts to the chase and also gives some technical details on pigments and dyes: https://www.dispersions-pigments.basf.com/portal/basf/ien/dt.jsp?setCursor=1_561069
"...a pigment is any finely divided insoluble black, white or colored solid material...Pigments are always incorporated by simple physical mixing with the medium, and it is this feature that distinguishes them from dyes...dyes are soluble in the media in which they are incorporated and pigments are not...Pigments are classified as either organic or inorganic...Organic pigments are based on carbon chains and carbon rings...Inorganic pigments, chemical compounds not based on carbon, are usually metallic salts."
You should consider that this is a "partial" dye, since it's an organic pigment, and that all dyes are not as lightfast as mineral pigments. Keep paintings out of direct sunlight.

Alizarin Crimson was introduced into the mainstream of color names through the song "Wear Your Love Like Heaven" by Donovan in 1967 which became a hit and its lyrics include other proper color names like prussian blue, carmine, and alizarin crimson, which stood out most recognizably. However, he mispronounces it. A generation of hippies grew up up with the color "Al-i-zar-i-an Crimson" as a beautiful name (and assumed it was a beautiful color; and indeed they did get that right!). The correct pronunciation is more like "Al-izar-in". He also sings a color or two that don't even exist.
