Candelilla wax is similar to carnauba wax but is less hard and has a lower melting point (by over 10 degrees F). It can be used for some of the things the more versatile carnauba can but not all. For waxes in general both carnauba and candelilla are often clumped together as the hardest waxes available. Along with that goes the expected higher melting points and brittleness that higher molecular weight substances generally have. The flakes and particles of 2 bags of carnauba and candelilla held together are so close in color that unless they were labeled you couldn't tell them apart. That is not until you undertook melting them and poking a tool into a cooled chunk of the two. That's when candelilla gives itself away.
If you research the two waxes you'll find many of the same suggested uses. One of the glaring differences, however, has to do with one of these waxes more esoteric properties (which does shows itself in practical uses), and that is candelilla's chemistry which is about 40% or higher hydrocarbons, 40% esters and smaller percentages of resin acids and alcohols. in comparison with carnauba which has only 1 to 3 % hydrocarbons. This would make candelilla a poor candidate as a mold release agent applied to smooth molds with liquid unsaturated polyesters or epoxies. It would also not be possible to make solvent resistant hydrophobic films resistant to toluene, acetone, and others since candelilla wax is soluble in those solvents (carnauba wax is not).

Another interesting note about candelilla wax when compared to carnauba wax is cost. Perhaps a decade ago candelilla was touted as a less expensive alternative to carnauba, either replacing a whole or part of the carnauba portion of a particular formulation. Today the reverse is true, candellila is actually the more expensive of the two, perhaps due to increased scale of production.
Candelilla is derived from a small shrub native to northern Mexico and the southwest US. It comes from the succulent "candelilla" shrubs leaves and stems by boiling them in water and acid. The "cerote" raises to the top and is skimmed off and further refined.
Candelilla is said to be mainly used for raising the hardness of other waxes without raising their melting points. It's used in leather dressings, polishes, beeswax substitute, candle wax modifier, sealing wax, paper sizing, waterproofing, investment casting wax, and insect-proofing.
Other interesting uses are in sealing wax for letters and documents, part of the process in making rubber cement, part of the process in making "ebonite" (an early polymeric "hard rubber" consisting of linseed oil, natural rubber, and sulfur; early "ace" combs were made of it). Note that unfortunately the source for the last 3 uses don't elaborate on what "part" candelilla played.
