Zinc oxide is widely recognized as an ingredient in ointments like sunscreen lotion (resistant to UV), baby diaper rash ointment, and as an inorganic white colorant for use in paints, which replaced lead white pigment, and was almost completely replaced itself by titanium dioxide pigment (which is a purer and more opaque white). It has a great many other uses in technologies like electronics and exotic nanostructures. Other uses are still being researched. In the arts community it is most commonly used as a pigment in paints, and as an ingredient in ceramic glazes.

The Museum of Fine Arts CAMEO art materials database has a well rounded short description on zinc oxide that begins by saying it is insoluble in water and:
"... is prepared by the oxidation of pure Zinc or by roasting zinc ore. It is used for a variety of purposes, however, the most important is as a paint pigment called Zinc white. The stable, opaque white powder is permanent and nontoxic. It was known since the Middle Ages but was rarely used as a pigment until 1834 when it was introduced as a watercolor pigment called Chinese white. By the turn of the century, zinc white had replaced Lead white in most paints, even though it had less covering power. Zinc oxide very strongly absorbs Ultraviolet radiation. Medicinally, zinc oxide is often used to treat rashes (e.g., Desinex); mixed with a small amount of iron oxide, it is sold as "Calamine" lotion. Zinc oxide is used as a pigment in oil paints, watercolor paints, ceramic glazes, printing inks, glass colorants, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, ointments, and UV absorber."

These days most zinc oxide is produced synthetically, but its probable first use goes back to 500 BC where it's mentioned in an Indian medical text. It may have been used by earlier humans as a medicine or pigment. Zinc oxide has been found in early zinc mines in Zawar, India dating from the 1st millennium BC.

Wikipedia has a lengthy article on zinc oxide that describes 19th century uses in pigments and more recent applications as an ingredient in rubber (the tire industry), industrial ceramics, medicine, cigarette filters, food additive, pigment, UV absorber, as a steel coating protectant more flexible than galvanization by zinc metal, a plastics coating protectant against UV and oxidation, corrosion prevention in nuclear reactors, purifying natural gas, and potential future application in electronics, nanorod sensors,
spintronics, piezoelectricity, and anode material in Li-ion batteries.
