This is another organic pigment we carry, which is a medium red "azo" organic dye attached to an inorganic "substrate" which turns it into an organic pigment, tending to impart a degree of transparency. It has medium tinting strength. It has been called "barn red" or "hansa red". Carmine red, hansa yellow, phthalo blue, and phthalo green are other organic pigments we carry that start as dyes. This is surprisingly lighfast for a "semi-organic".

It has good alkali and acid resistance but does not have good chemical resistance to solvents which restricts it from manufactured goods which might come in contact with organic chemicals.
It is an inexpensive color which may require a wetting agent to disperse in a binder.
Chemically, it is a synthetic pigment, C.I. Pigment Red 3, 12120,
beta naphthol toluidine, similar to hansa yellow, an azo organic pigment, specifically a "monoazo".

BASF has a page I like that both cuts to the chase and also gives some technical details on pigments and dyes: https://www.dispersions-pigments.basf.com/portal/basf/ien/dt.jsp?setCursor=1_561069
"...a pigment is any finely divided insoluble black, white or colored solid material...Pigments are always incorporated by simple physical mixing with the medium, and it is this feature that distinguishes them from dyes...dyes are soluble in the media in which they are incorporated and pigments are not...Pigments are classified as either organic or inorganic...Organic pigments are based on carbon chains and carbon rings...Inorganic pigments, chemical compounds not based on carbon, are usually metallic salts."
You should consider that this is a "partial" dye, since it's an organic pigment, and that all dyes are not as lightfast as mineral pigments. Keep paintings out of direct sunlight.

The CAMEO art materials database at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts ("The Conservation and Art Materials Encyclopedia Online is a database that compiles, defines, and disseminates technical information on the distinct collection of terms, materials, and techniques used in the fields of art conservation and historic preservation.", in case you're unfamiliar with it says this about toluidine red (no punches pulled):
"A line of bright, transparent red synthetic azo-type organic pigments. Toluidine reds are based on the reaction of beta-naphthol with 2-nitro-4-toluidine. Toluidine red was first synthesized in 1904 by Lucius and Brüning in Germany. It reached its peak of popular use in the 1970s. In general, toluidine reds have fair lightfastness and weather resistance, but they have a tendency to bleed especially in oil paints. They are used in industrial coatings for air-dried and baked enamels and auto finishes. Toluidine reds are also used in wax crayons, pastels and watercolors."

The cost in my cart seems too high, what can I do?

This problem usually occurs with multiple items. We have free shipping on many of our items. In your cart items will have the sum of all embedded shipping costs. If you place an order for 3 or more "FreeShip" items, you will receive a "rebate" for the excess shipping. The more items you have the greater the shipping refund will be. You can also message us to ask what the total cost of your order will be when excess shipping is refunded before you purchase.
Or, if you see "Request a Custom Order" or "Message Seller", you can request a custom order and your items will be put in a custom listing with the correct shipping. You would purchase it like any other listing.

Always polite and friendly communications with NorthernWest Stuff! They have some really rare and unusual items, or even things as a 62 year old painter that I've never seen before. Thank you!

Gift for an artist!!! Very pleased

It’s all here, yay! Thanks!

Came looking for lamp black (didn't want to try making my own), found lots of other interesting things as well. Appreciate the message from the shop owner about how to open the package to avoid making a mess. Everything looks great; thanks so much!
