Cadmium colors are very well known because they have been a staple in every painters toolbox for many years. Besides yellow there is an orange and a red. This yellow is a brilliant color with very good tinting power, lightfastness, stability, and heat resistance which makes it often used in thermoplastics which must be heated to high temperatures to be processed. Cadmium yellow should be handled with great care because of its toxicity. See the safety paragraph below. Mainly, don't get it airborne so you won't inhale it.

Because of its heat resistance it is also used in art glass making and lampworking (glass). There are no other colors that come close to the cadmiums in producing saturated and bright yellows and reds in glass.
Our shop had only one bright yellow, hansa yellow, which is an organic pigment (a dye bound to an inorganic base). It is not as lightfast as inorganic pigments. Since we had a good selection of organic and inorganic reds and blues, we felt we needed an inorganic yellow which would be more lightfast, as inorganic pigments naturally are. From Wikipedia:
"When first introduced, there were hardly any stable pigments in the yellow-to-red range, with orange and bright red being very troublesome. The cadmium pigments eventually replaced compounds such as mercury sulfide (the original vermilion) with greatly improved lightfastness."

Here is the CAMEO art and museum materials database paragraph on cadmium yellow:
"A permanent, yellow pigment composed of Cadmium sulfide. Cadmium yellows were synthetically prepared in Germany by Friedrich Strohmeyer in 1817. The bright yellow pigments slowly began to be used as artist paints in the mid 1840s, gaining in popularity in the early 20th century. Variations in particle size and chemical composition produce as range of colors from light yellow to orange. In the 1920s, the cadmium pigments were co-precipitated with Barium sulfate to form the cheaper cadmium lithopone (cadmopone) pigments. Cadmium sulfide also occurs in minor amounts in the mineral greenockite."

Safety in using:
Cadmium yellow (and other cadmium based pigments) should be handled with extra care. It is probably the least safe colorant we carry, which is because of the cadmium connection. You should be *very* careful not to get it airborne when you are dispensing it and mixing it into your medium, that way you cannot inhale it which is the most likely way you can get it into your body. As you spoon it out of its package the most effective way you can avoid getting it airborne is to move very slowly as you transfer it. Cadmium yellow has wonderful lightfastness and other positive properties, but if you choose to use it, take precautions. It goes without saying you should use a dust mask when dispensing it. Once mixed into your medium it is "sealed" and non-toxic. The NFPA/HMIS "safety diamond" with the blue, red, yellow, and white sub-diamonds gives cadmium yellow a 3 in the blue health diamond. The ratings run from 0 to 4 (with 4 being very dangerous. Here are the official meanings of the numbers:
0 = No hazard
1 = Can cause irritation
2 = Can cause injury
3 = Can cause serious injury
4 = Can cause major injury or death
